Located in Refugio County between Rockport and Bayside, Copano Bay is a shallow, grass-rich estuary that serves as a nursery and feeding ground for some of Texas's most prized game fish. The bay covers roughly 15,000 acres and averages just 4–5 feet deep — ideal conditions for wading anglers and shallow-draft boats alike.
Top Species to Target on Copano Bay
Redfish (Red Drum)
Redfish are the crown jewel of Copano Bay. The shallow grass flats and oyster reefs create perfect ambush points for these hard-fighting fish. Look for tailing reds in water less than two feet deep, especially on warm, calm mornings. The best action typically runs from September through November, though redfish are present year-round.
Best spots: The grass flats along the north shoreline near Bayside, the oyster reefs near the Copano Bay Causeway, and the back pockets of Mission Bay.
Speckled Trout (Spotted Seatrout)
Speckled trout are arguably the most sought-after fish in Copano Bay. They love the deeper grass beds and channel edges, especially during the cooler months. Early morning topwater action in spring and fall can be absolutely explosive — there's nothing quite like watching a big trout blow up on a topwater plug at sunrise.
Best spots: The deeper grass beds on the south side of the bay, the channel edges near the Copano Bay Pier, and the mouths of Mission Bay and St. Charles Bay.
Black Drum
Black drum are abundant in Copano Bay and put up a surprisingly strong fight for their size. They love oyster reefs and shell pads, where they root around for crabs and mollusks. Spring is prime time for big drum, with fish commonly exceeding 20–30 pounds.
Flounder
Flounder are a seasonal treat on Copano Bay, with the fall "flounder run" being a major event for local anglers. As water temperatures drop in October and November, flounder migrate from the shallow bays toward the Gulf passes, creating excellent opportunities for anglers who know where to position themselves.

Spring (March–May)
Excellent for black drum and redfish. Trout begin moving to the shallows. Water temps warm quickly.
Summer (June–August)
Fish early morning and evening. Trout and redfish retreat to deeper, cooler water midday.
Fall (Sept–Nov)
Best overall fishing of the year. Flounder run, redfish are active, and trout are feeding heavily.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Winter Texans love the slower pace. Cold fronts push fish to deeper holes. Big trout are possible.
